A drop in the ocean

$100 million here, $100 million there - Paul Krugman

I was surprised that Obama really tried to pass this off as a legitimate money-saving exercise. I was pleasantly surprised that just about everybody called him on it. That presidential honeymoon is pretty much over before Obama has 100 days under his belt...

It may depend on the definition of 'honeymoon'; with approval ratings still around 65%, his political capital is far from expended. The media calling him out on this move is less about his 'honeymoon', in my view, and more about doing their job. By not calling out such an obvious PR stunt, it would all but affirm their Obama-goggles. This is like knocking a 75 mph fastball out the ballpark.

Point taken. Was still surprised that this measure invoked a tsk-tsk from The Krug, who is no friend to the opposition, and who largely supports spending reallocations that would make real fiscal responsibility difficult in the current environment.

In any case, a Honeymoon ended does not equate an exhaustion of political capital. But I do expect that we will see increasing scrutiny of the President now that he's a bit wet behind the ears, and I wonder whether this is an indicator that that is happening.
